GOD has shown me my calling...this is what it is

God has called me to be a teacher.....but not just any teacher....a special kind of teacher....a teacher who teaches young children with autism. Autism is like Darfur, nobody knows about it!!! Which is a bad thing! 1 of 150 births; every 20 minutes a child is lost to autism.....THERE IS NO CURE....Personally I hope that my children are the ones with autism and this is the reason: 1) that way you dont have as high chances of having an autistic child and 2) beacuse if im specialized in educating children with autism...then im the perfect father for them.

Hi.

You're an ignoramus.

Dafur is a genocide. Autism is a neurological "disorder". Autism doesn't kill people. Also, people know about both as they're both "in things" now. Which really isn't a good thing, but what can you do. Personally, I'm sure a lot of autistic people would love to be out of the spot light, so this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Now, you say that every twenty minutes a child is lost to autism. How exactly is someone "Lost" to autism? Lost indicates that they're missing and can't be found. Are you referring to the fact perhaps every twenty minutes a child is diagnosed with autism? A strange statistic if I ever heard one. Once a person is diagnosed doesn't meant that they become someone else. You don't "lose" someone with autism any more than you lose someone to blindness. You remind me of this letter to the editor I saw in a Time Magazine once where the person talked about how Autism was like a thief in the night that stole the parent's child away. Those type of parents are in denial and don't understand that there never was a "normal" child to begin with. Instead they keep on trying to look for that normal child that never existed often times causing more harm than good.

No. There isn't a cure. It's like trying to cure blue eyes. You can't really cure them. Are you saying that everyone should be brown eyed? Or green eyed? I like green eyes. There's nothing wrong with blue eyes, they're just a different color. (And I shan't go into my personal theory that autistic people are a separate species). So, not there isn't a cure.

It's I'm, not im. If you can't get that right, how do you expect to be a teacher? And please. You're not making anyone feel any better about being a parent. Most of the worst parents I know of autistic children are the ones that work in the field because they end up turning their kids into experiments. Believe me, I've seen it.

God calls in mysterious and wierd ways. My calling was through comedy central. a couple years ago, they had a special comedy telethon where multiple big name comics gave stand up to help raise money for finding the cure to autism, and it was hosted by John Stewart. During that special, they had multiple videos, and they all captured my heart....i remember wiping my eyes as a river began to flow.

Um... yay?

I had another love then: Rocks and Minerals; geology. I could not decide which one to do...and i have been in favor of both at various times.....but i have been moved tonight....as i browsed through myspace layouts finding an autism awareness one which is what is on my profile.......and it decided it for me....God called me to show love and care to children who had no choice to be autistic and who don't understand some things that we understand.

And you have no choice in being Normal, but you don't see me trying to cure you, do you? Personally, I think I'm better off. Also, there are things that you don't understand that I do. Like the Big Picture. Do you have any idea how much better the world would be if people would stop being so self centered and actually thing a few years in advance in regards to their actions? Or even looking at things from all the different possibilities? The world isn't black or white, us vs them, you know. But I forget, you're normal and don't understand it. Personally you're sounding like you're doing this so that you can get good strokes. So that people will say to you how wonderful you are.

I will be writing a petition up for Governor Arnold (cant spell his last name....lol) and i will have it available for you to sign if you wish to support autism awareness as well as support the education of the autistic. Because there are NO COLLEGES in California that offer this major....and my parents said that they wud NOT pay for my college if i went out of state.
Go to youtube and type in autism and watch a video that will captivate your soul!

It's not that hard to look up the good Govenator's last name. Type in "California Governor"
in google and I'm sure you figure it out. Support the education of the autistic? Are we educating autistic people now? Is that what you mean... oh. I see, you mean major especially dealing with autism. I'm sure there is something somewhere, or you could just make one up. The do allow you to specialize majors. Of course you appear to be too stupid to even look up the Governor's last name, how do I expect you to do some research on college majors. Also what is 'wud'?

No love.

Kippur.

"Autism is like Darfur"? Holy flying fuck, what is wrong with people?

"1) that way you dont have as high chances of having an autistic child"

Oh, yes, like there's someone counting the number of children being born. "Oh, sorry, you're only caller 140; your kid won't have autism. But look, since you're the twentieth to call since we reached 120, you do get the consolation prize of knowing your kid will be subjected to physical abuse. Awesome, right?"

And apparently WUD is an abbreviation of "Water utility database" or "what's up doc?"

People are idiots.

Wow. We need to raise Anne Sullivan from the dead (into a competent undead, mind you) so that she can smack this random MySpace "glory-hound." I'm pretty sure this idiot was just looking for some ass-pats and deluding themselves. How about both? I know that's not plausible but it would be just what this guy needs to wake him up. :D

Then again... that would be kind of cruel to Anne Sullivan. But still, it would be worth it. XD

As for the ribbons and stuff... urgh. Yeah. That's a bit quick too, isn't it? Did the guy have any of that stuff before he posted this entry? I still think he'll grow bored after several months and give up. Well, I hope he will.

I'm sure there's probably even specializations within psychology majors for, like, abnormal psychology, and maybe even specifically autism. There's also special education courses, of course, which include autism.

What an idiot.

Honestly, I do kind of imagine that being a low-functioning autistic is really unpleasant, if for no other reason than you can't tell people "stop, go away, I don't want you doing that" very easily.

Otherwise, I mean ... it's a different skill set. My sister (is an Aspie) is naturally better at intellectual pursuits than I am and knows more about her particular given subjects than I do about mine. On the other hand, I can tell when a guy is flirting with her. Neither skill set is better, but neither of us can get through life on just our strengths -- we need to work on our weak points as well.

Date: 2007-10-25 03:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] christinaathena.livejournal.com
Oh, certainly. But it's made worse by "experts" who refuse to listen to actual autistics' input and use teaching methods that are actually counter-productive, as well as making assumptions about what's going on in their mind.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] notadoor.livejournal.com
Yeah, pretty much the worst thing you can do in a "helping" profession is assume you know what's going on in the other person's mind. (Actually, I think it's a bad assumption to make in general.)

Listening to the person you're trying to help (or someone who's been experienced something similar) is generally a good idea as well.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
I don't know if the really lower functioning ones notice the annoying people. I know when I do the space out thing I don't notice people.

As for the higher lower functioning ones, sometimes that's why they get violent, because they don't know any other way to express them self.

Date: 2007-10-25 04:39 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] christinaathena.livejournal.com
Alot of times, that's *why* they're "low-functioning", defensive mechanism against a perceived threat. And all too often, the "experts" respond by direct one-on-one intensive focus, which simply pushes the person further and further away.

I remember reading of an autistic whose first words, at the age of 35, were "Don't talk to me like I'm an idiot" :-)

Date: 2007-10-26 12:57 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
That's because a lot people seem to think that not being able to talk is the same as not being able to think. Which may be why Normal people are talking all the time. XD

Date: 2007-10-26 02:32 pm (UTC)

Yeah, but not each other's fur. ^_^ There's a theory, which I find convincing, that language use in humans, particularly chatting and gossip and the like, evolved to fill the same social-bonding functions in humans that grooming does in other apes, the advantage of language for that function being that one can speak and work at the same time, and engage in conversation with more than one individual at the same time, and important consideration given that humans tend to form larger groups than other apes.

Yes, I'm sure that God works on a percentage basis when it comes to assigning autistic kids to the world. *Headdesk*

Speaking as the father of an autistic child, if some bright boffin came up with a pill that would magically make Thomas "normal" (whatever the fragg that means), I'd give it to him without a second's hesitation. But I'm never going to love him less for what he is, and I don't consider the state of his mind some sort of curse or disease. It's just what he is, and I would prefer whatever teachers or others who help him along the way to regard him as a person, not someone who is "afflicted."

Date: 2007-10-25 04:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
I'd give it to him without a second's hesitation.

I don't know how functioning your Thomas is, or how old, but most autistic adults that I talk to don't want to be cured. Not to be insultive or anything, but the idea of becoming normal (which would mean non-autistic in Autistic circles. Also Neurotypical or mainstream) is rather abhorrent to us. We don't want to become normal because, to be frank, we think the lot of you are nutters.

BUT you do have the right attitude for which I give you full props for. As my mom constantly says, you just need to give your child what he needs (which isn't necessarily what he wants... much to our chagrin, but that's with all kids. XD )

I think he must s/he´s still very young (the reference to her/his parents...). This person probably watched some emotional vid and come out with the wrong idea. If s/he´s really planning to work with autistic children, s/he will probably be embarassed by this text a few years from now.

Oh, and statistic doesn´t work like that.

Alexander would also like to mention that some people should be careful about what God calls on them to do. Apparently, God told him to kick a puppy once, and when he refused, his house caught fire and burned to the ground.
