The strange case of Laruna Troven

I've rambled a lot about Alec and his changing relationships, but I've been doing a subplot with his twin sister, Laruna and it's gotten me thinking about her and Mary Sues, for I know that she'll end up being messed with. The strange thing about her is that I don't think she's very Sue-able. At least with some tropes. Let's see, the common Sue Tropes are the Warrior Sue, the Princess Sue, the heritage Sue, the tragic past Sue, the angsty Sue and the not completely human Sue.

First the Warrior Sue. These Sues are the ones who say that they're just as good at the guys in fighting and everything else. They should be allowed to go on quests with the guys and are subjected to the Designated Misogynistic Bastard. Now there's Laruna. She is just as good as the guys in fighting. She's also better in controlling her powers than her brother, Alec. Misogynistic Bastards, if subjected to her, will have her brothers back her up and they have the actual knowledge that yes, she does have the abilities. Sure, she can't fight with a sword, but she's a damn good water wizard, and there's something dangerous about a person who could, in theory, freeze ever drop of water in your body. After all humans are mostly water. She can also drink almost anyone under the table and likes to start bar fights (much to her brothers' chagrin). So, she can't be turned into a Warrior Sue because she's already one. It's canon.

The Princess Sue is the one who's a princess and hates wearing dresses and wishes that she could be like a guy or loves wearing them. She wants to fall in love with someone and marry a prince. She wants to adventure and will often run away with a prince or fall in love with a handsome prince and get married. Now, Laruna loves pretty dresses. She loves dressing up and flaunting her womanliness. She's a horrible flirt. And will freely have sex with anyone who catches her eye, man or woman. This does make it kind of difficult for her to be a virginal Sue whose first experience is with the DLI, but at least she won't have any issues of having sex before marriage. In regards to the wearing of men's clothes, she does that too. No one sees this as unusual. It's just Laruna. They're fashionable and perhaps a bit feminine at times, but they're pants and a tunic. Just like any other guy. So, that kinda kills that one.

One of the annoying things about heritage Sues is that the SUDDENLY SOMEHOW learn that they're a princess, royalty etc at some MAGICAL time on a SPECIFIC birthday. Laruna is the equivalent of nobility and as high as you can get in her society. She's already a member of one of the twelve first families, so she can't mysteriously find out that she's already one of them. She's even related to royalty, the fey court royalty. Her ancestor is the Queen's brother. This also knocks out the non human inheritance Sue, because she is a bit non-human. Admittedly the blood is a bit thin, but she does have the Fey's grace and beauty. Alec inherited the ears and physical traits which make him look kinda gawky, while Greywolf inherited the ability to be impregnable to psyhic attacks and couldn't grow facial hair if his life depended on it. Sooo that takes care of the heritage and non-human Sue bits.

Now, Laruna (and her siblings) do have tragic past. It doesn't involve abuse (not that will stop the fan girls) but it is tragic. Her mother died when she was ten and her father up and left them. (This may change later). She also almost got sold into slavery (again, might change) and has a severe case of claustrophobia. She got trapped in rubble when a building collapsed on her with a dead guy who wanted to hurt her when she was sixteen - seventeen. So, tragic past, check.

The only Sue that will be uncanon for Laruna would be the angsty Sue. She does not angst. She's optimistic, cheerful and loves life. She'll meet any challenge and kick it soundly in the balls. While at times she can be introspective, she just doesn't angst. It's just not productive. She'd rather go out and do something about the problem than sit around and weep.

Of course, this won't stop the fanits from totally destroying her character, but I thought it was an interesting bit about her characterization. And the thing is, I didn't set out to make her anti-Sue, she just turned out that way.

Gender, Mary Sues, and Alec Troven

One of the best known facts about Mary Sues is that they are an authorial insert. A perfected authorial insert, that is the author's idealized self, powerful, beautiful, knowledgeable, loved by everyone and always gets her man where they live happily ever after. The problem with this is that such stories are highly unrealistic and neglect everything in favor the Sue. Their male counterparts, Gary Stus, are of the same ilk, though while they generally don't go for true love, their luck with women is highly unnatural. Not even James Bond is as lucky as they are. Which brings me to Alec.

I've had Alec since the early -mid nineties, which makes him about fourteen years old. Alec was, for lack of a better term, my Sue. I never thought of anything odd about having a male idealized self. And boy was he idealized. He had powers up the yin-yang. And he stole them from all over the place. He never had any romantic encounters though, while I was interested in some of the male characters I didn't really know about homosexuality. It just didn't exist in my world, so the idea of two males being romantically involved never even occurred to me. However in my own way I did create romantic attachments. Alec found himself the son or brother of people I was interested in. Perfectly normal relationships between two men, or so I thought.

As the years past and I found Fandom and Fan Fiction by other people (of which I had written heavily in notebooks which I shall never share with anyone, but will probably end up being published after I die) and read some. I still did not encounter Slash.

I first encountered slash in college, I think my junior year. I met a fan fiction writer who wrote Gundam Wing fan fiction. She wrote Heero and Duo slash and explained it all to me. It was an enlightening experience. For starters it allowed a story element that had been bothering me fall into place. But I digress.

I always considered Alec a part of me. My mom recently said, about this whole gender identity issue that it was because I wanted to be Alec. I said no, it wasn't. But I didn't say that he was me. Mostly because that's the sort of thing you don't say to your mother. But it made me think. Alec is a Mary Sue. Alec is my idealized self. (God only knows why he looks like Orlando Bloom... if you look at [livejournal.com profile] alec_troven's icons, you'll see what I mean.)

In all my imaginings of all my little Sue creatures that I've had through out the years, they've always been male. Some of them have even been furries, now that I think about it. But that's neither here nor there. The important point is that they have always been male. At no point have I ever thought about being female or having a female avatar. Now some people may this may have to do more with female empowerment.

That is, males are traditionally thought of as being more capable of doing things while females are the weaker gender who have to stay at home and have many babies. However that can be easily countered with the Warrior Mary Sue. This would be the Mary Sue who is a better fighter than any man, even those who have been training longer than the Sue has been alive. In the fandoms that I trawl in, she's most often found in the Lord of the Rings. There she proves her prowess with the sword or the bow by beating Boromir, Aragorn or Legolas. Sometimes all three. Boromir is usually placed as the Evil Bastard Against All Women Being Warrior that the Sue has to prove and put into place. Then he reluctantly accepts her and later tries to rape her. My point, here, is that if I really wanted a female avatar who could be just as good as the guys, I could have made one. But I haven't.

I've never identified with females. I've never thought of myself as female. Alec as a Mary Sue (or Gary Sue as I sometimes call him) is my idealized self. Over the years he has evolved and changed as I learned to go from Sue to actual character. But he's still always been me.

Now that I've discovered the fact that I'm 'genderqueer' or what have you, all of this makes sense. My idealized self, Alec, is a male because I too am a male. Interestingly enough there have been times in my 'fan fiction' where Alec has been changed into a female, but it has always felt wrong and I've quickly changed him back.

Alec has moved on from being 'me' to his own character but in some ways I still feel like he's me and I still want to be him.

Mostly because I'm a freak and way blown tired out of mine I took the Mary Sue test for Kent (the profiler) Harbringer and Alec.

Kent scored a 69 which is 50+
Kill it dead. Or make sure you read the instructions properly (some people don't do this, which causes freakishly high scores) and take the test again.

Alec scored a 42 36+
Fanfiction authors, you might just want to start over. Role-players and original fiction authors, at this point your characters are likely to provoke eye-rolling and exclaimations of "yeah, right!" from your readers. (Well, at least from me.) Immediate workover is probably in order.

Eragon, while I'm at it, scored a 124. Whooo... wow.

Random: Apparently, according to Miss F. Gary (from the Evil Overlord's story) motivation being Money wasn't good enough. He should have some other, deeper motivation beyond wanting money. Gary says that he likes the money and is okay with being shallow like that.

I really love this essay.

Mark Twain tears apart Fenimore Cooper's Pathfinder series. The guy who wrote "Last of the Mohicans". I tore it apart in an essay of mine, but Mark Twain does it so much better than I could. He really is an expert essayist

So, now I have this idea of a fan fic where Nogard gets seduced by a Mary Sue. Nogard is a book. It is a asexual androgynies looking creature with long silvery white hair, slim and has wings. Very pretty. Completely asexual though. It's a book. Books aren't really known for their sex lives.

But its pretty. So it will end up having sex. I can see where it happens to and how it happens. And oh dear GOD someone stop me.

You're not supposed to write bad fan fic on your own work that's not even published yet!
