I finally got a breast binder after hemming and hawing and a minor mishap of sorts. My parents don't know. But I'll deal with that when it comes. It's like a tee-shirt, well an undershirt actually, and it's very comfortable. More comfortable than a bra. I don't know if it's the right size though, or I just have big boobs because I can still seem some of my chest when I wear it. I don't even know if it looks good.

But it felt good wearing it.

To think about yes.

Awesomeness. Congratulations. Do you think your parents will accept it some day?

Yay! It does have an amazing impact, doesn't it? Wearing a stuffed bra had a similar effect for me. Breasts, or lack thereof, are powerful markers of female/male.

Yeah. My biggest problem right now is the hair and the not knowing if it fits right.

I haven't gone out into public yet. I went to a friend's house last night to play Dresden Files, but no one said anything. I didn't expect anyone to. It was just thar, you know. And they knew me. So...

FWIW, people don't really say, "Gee, your chest looks dramatically smaller today!" Especially when you tend to wear baggy clothes that hide your shape anyway.

Also, I do a lot of shit that my parents don't know about and probably will never know about. I'd file wearing a breast binder in that category.

People generally don't say my how much smaller your boobs look, I don't think, do they?

I think I'm just muffling.

The only time anyone has ever commented on the size of my chest, I've been dating them or clothes shopping with them. It's just not a topic for everyday conversation :)

They're very nice! I'm just not sure it fits. o_O

From: [identity profile] thelittlebudgie.livejournal.com
What's the problem with the fit? It should be fairly snug, and getting it on is a bit of a struggle for me, but it shouldn't hurt or anything.

Date: 2010-08-27 06:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
I have trouble getting it over my head. The previous size I couldn't even pull over my chest, so I got the next size up.

It's snug! Doesn't hurt. But there's still some breastage showing? Kinda like man-boobs? I dunno, I have no experience with this!!!

From: [identity profile] thelittlebudgie.livejournal.com
I think having trouble getting it over your head is pretty much par for the course, unless you get the sort that zip up.

If you can, slide your hand under (from the bottom works best for me) and push your breasts towards your armpits. It'll minimize their appearance, but you'll still have a suggestion of muscle/manboobage.

Also, where did you get the binder from? I know Underworks tells you to measure your chest (over and under the boobs) and they list sizes based on those measurements, but I'm not sure if other companies do.

Date: 2010-08-27 06:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
I got it from where you sent me the link from.

I guess maybe I got a too big size. Blagh.

Date: 2010-08-27 06:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thelittlebudgie.livejournal.com
Well, if the other size doesn't fit over your head, this should be the right size.

Two things to keep in mind:

1 - My chest always seems huge to me. Even when I'm binding, I'm convinced that I might as well be wearing a pushup bra. Pushing your boobs to the sides helps, buut, again, we're looking for them. We're trying to get rid of them, so of course they seem all the bigger. Other people? Really don't notice, even though it seems the most obvious thing in the world to us. So try and get a second opinion.

2 - How you dress helps - t-shirts that don't cling and button-up shirts overtop that hide the dip of the waist are what I tend to default to. Clothing like that tends to make any remaining boobage seem like a bit of extra weight or muscle, and it's not like there's any shortage of cis guys with that.

I don't know. Maybe someday if I have more confidence I will put together a walkthrough of how I dress so (general) you can see how clothing and posture and binding and packing all interact.

I just wanted to quickly say congrats, and I'm glad you've done something that makes you happy. I really do hope your parents support you with this :)

I too have issues with my gender and have been considering buying a binder, so reading your posts on the matter has been interesting because I can relate to how you feel.

It took a lot of courage to do it. And I'd been putting it off, and putting it off and then I just said 'Fuckit' and bought it.

Apologies for being ignorant on this, but why did you get one? Not questioning the getting of one, just not understanding; I feel like I missed a post somewhere.

Of course you can see some chest when it's on - you have ribs after all :)

Good on you getting a binder. I can see worrying about it "working" before you go out in public.

If you're really concerned, take some comparison photos.
Put on a normal bra, and a relatively tight shirt - one that clearly shows your boobs and curves - and take a photo from the side, to measure "stick out"-ness. Optionally from the front as well.

Then swap the bra for the binder, wear a comparably tight shirt (it may not be the same shirt) and do another shot, same angles.

When doing these, it's best to be in the exact same place, and have some way to see the size. For instance, back against the wall (ensures same place), and striped wallpaper or the like.

Now you have completely objective before-and-afters, so you can really see what difference it makes.

You can then share the photos with me or others - people you know will give you honest feedback, and you don't have to worry about being embarrassed.

This is a big step, I'm proud of you.

Autism + Transgender

From: [identity profile] autarkhos.livejournal.com
I've noticed autistic women seem to tend towards transgenderism. I know at least two not including yourself (one's going to get the operation in... about two weeks, I think, on the NHS of course) and that's out of two autistic women I know. =p

I wonder why that is. Maybe the entire autism thing is a much more masculine trait? Huh, I don't know.
