1. Yom Kippur the holiday of "We suck, forgive us".

2. Listening to NPR on the way home yesterday. Man on the radio says that he refuses to believe that God is cruel and inhumane, etc. My thoughts: God is a bastard, look at the Bible except for the New Testament.

3. While there are lots of people afraid of the Steven Moffit episodes of Doctor Who, the one that's scared me most is the Family of Blood. Specifically when we learn the fate of the Sister. She's trapped in all the mirrors. Why does this bother me? Because whenever I'm backing out my car from the apartment garage I check my side view mirror and I can swear I see something moving, walking past behind the car. Almost all the time.

4. I am bored and in a rut. I want to either a. take a class or b. teach a class.

The end of the Family of Blood was good, but for true terror you need to make the same mistake I did; watch Blink, in the dark, at two in the morning, alone.

Just try and close your eyes to go to sleep after that. I dare you.

See, Blink never bothered me so much. Likely because we don't have those sort of things out here in Los Angeles: All the architecture with the statues staring at you all over the place. It's an utter non-issue for me.

Date: 2009-10-02 07:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gjohnsonkoehn.livejournal.com
It wasn't so much the specific idea of statues coming alive to get me, more the nameless dread that if I close my eyes, even for a second, something could get me.

From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
Ah! I see. That is different. On the other hand I sort of live with the idea normally. It's why I like sitting where I can see the entire room and things like that.

My thoughts: God is a bastard, look at the Bible except for the New Testament.

The new testament is the new rules and they are to be observed over the old rules. If you're judging by the old rules then you're judging God incorrectly. I can't picture "Above all, love one another" to be the rules of a bastard.

Date: 2009-10-02 06:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kippurbird.livejournal.com
If you're Christian at least, the new rules take precedence over the old ones.

And when I say God is a bastard I'm looking at the stories of him killing people on what at times seem like whims. He needs to be placated a lot. He'd rather kill and start over than try and fix what he has.

From: [identity profile] fritters.livejournal.com
Jesus didn't need to be placated or kill people. And Jesus is part of the whole of God. It's easy to judge the old testament by today's rules but A: It's hard to know exactly what things were like then and what people were like then and B: The new testament is proof that there is more to God than that. Do you want to be judged by what you've done this week or what you did twenty years ago?

Except that I'm Jewish and don't believe in Jesus like that.

From: [identity profile] fritters.livejournal.com
Why are you Jewish if you don't like God?

Date: 2009-10-02 07:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gjohnsonkoehn.livejournal.com
Man, have you read the Old Testament? The Israelites spend half their time ignoring, scorning or pestering god for this reason or that. Kippur is well inside the tradition of Jews on this one.

That depends. If twenty years ago I wiped out all of humanity save four people, ordered the levelling of a city, or killed a man's whole family just to win a bet, then yes, I kind of feel like it'd be fair to judge me based on what I'd done then.

From: [identity profile] fritters.livejournal.com
We may as well agree to disagree then, because my God is loving and kind and mainly from the new testament. And it's not like the people in the old testament didn't try his patience like whoah.

Even in the New Testament, there's some pretty dickish things.

Besides, Jesus himself said that he did not come to replace the old laws. That was Paul's innovation.

Classes sound fun and yeah, I was raised a Quaker and honestly most of the bible stories I knew just worried me. I kind of like the Greek gods better because you're supposed to be scared of them, its all so much clearer.

I really haven't seen enough of Doctor Who but that sounds like a really creepy episode. Tenth Kingdom has some terrifying mirror things going on in it.

Third season episode, Being Human/Family of Blood.

Though Blink is really the episode that seems to scare most people. All those angel statues out there? The gargoyles and things sitting on buildings looking at you? They might be space aliens that can only move when you don't look at them. And if they touch you they can send you back in time.

I've seen Blink, every once in a while SyFy does a Who marathon and I watch but its in the background so I don't always pay that much attention.

I have far too many canons that I need to watch and catch up with. For now though I just want to be home and not having to do stuff.

Any news on your friend and Abhorsen playing around? Sameth is always loud in my head and all of our threads have really helped me feel like I'm getting a better sense of him.

Ummm... Happy Yom Kippur? What's the standard greeting for the holiday? I know it can't be 'I forgive you', but cause only God can do that, or something...

Anyway, have a happy/sad/solemn/respectable/amicable/peaceful one, whichever applies. *is ashamed of ignorance of Jewish traditions*

Maybe the local high school needs some adult ed teachers? My mom did that for a couple of years, and she doesn't have an education degree or even a degree in what she was teaching (adult ed: not the best education available). I bet there'd be an interest in SF Lit or something.
