I'm at Calstate Domingez Hills right now with my mother as she's trying to complete the things necessary to graduate. Currently one of the things blocking her is a hyphen. Yes, one of these "-". You see the Dean of the Music department is, in her words "a Poo-Poo head". He really doesn't like my mother and seems to be determined to make her life miserable.

She had to do a mini-thesis for her graduation final project thing. The paper reached his desk and he rejected it for these three reasons:

*He didn't like the order of the words in the title.
*He didn't like the tone of the introduction.
*There wasn't a table of contents.

So, my mom fixed those "problems" and today we went down to hand in the paper. Looking at the introduction he said you're missing a hyphen here. And he won't accept the paper until she puts in the hyphen.

Now we're at the library where she put in the missing hyphen and is currently printing out the introduction to hand in again.

We've been here for about three hours now trying to get all the paper work straightened out because her advisor is absentminded and forgot to hand certain things in at the right time. This is the third time we've had to come down here to get this straightened out. And each time it was supposed to be the last time and she could graduate.

Really, what's pissing me off the most, is that hyphen. I mean... it's a hyphen. One single hyphen.

Jerk.

A hyphen.

Wow.

I can understand the table of contents, but the rest? If he were eight, I'd say he needed to take a nap.

He really, really, really doesn't like my mom. He once yelled at her for fifteen minutes straight, in the middle of class.

I would seriously, honestly, file a complaint with the school's Dean, whoever is over him, because that is absolute bollocks. Seriously.

I would've been tempted to take out a pen and hand-write a hyphen.

What an ass.

...WTF? How anal is that? First of all, he's supposed to be her teacher, not her editor. Yes, he can demand that the basic requirements (table of contents, for example) be met. He can even give her a chance (not require, give her an opportunity, with the understanding that her grade will be affected by refusal) to change the tone and wording of the title.

But refusing to accept a paper because of a single missing punctuation mark? When her degree is on the line? When he isn't even an English teacher? That's abusive.

This is why I'm pretty leery about the whole concept of tenure.

In my opinion, leaving off a table of contents is pretty sloppy (especially for a thesis). If I were a professor and recieved a large, important assignment missing such a critical component, I would develop a rather low opinion of the author. It is easy to see how a person in his postition would be "peeved" and impose rather rigid standards on a person who had been treating a very important assignment lightly.
