No Eldest tonight. Too busy packing to actually sit through the junk and go through it properly. I'm not going to be on for the next couple of days. Going to that conference in Stockton, like I mentioned earlier. No internet access for me. And even if I did have it, I'm not going to lug Eldest around with me. I have a better book to take up space.

I suggest using this time to recoup your braincells as we go into the final leg of Eldest where it can't get any better, so it must get worse.

We've got a dramatic final battle, a big revelation and the return of Murtagh!

In somewhat related news, I've decided that after Eldest I'm going to actually do a good book. After all, why should I ruin my life going over bad books? I'm going to do Q-Squared, by Peter David. I think it'll be an interesting comparison, looking back at Eldest and Eragon, because Peter David writes fan fiction for a living. At least that's what his Star Trek books always feel like. And they're good fan fiction. Unlike Paolini, whose books feel like bad fan fiction.

An analysis of one of the Pern books might be interesting, too.

A comparison between Anne's and Todd's books would be interesting.

That's easy enough. Anne can write, Todd can't. Anne writes with a sweeping brush that moves you. Todd writes traffic tickets.

*laughs* Well, that certainly one way to describe it. But it fits. And Todd has the tendency to write really bad Mary Sues, ie whatsherface in Dragon's Blood.

Might be good to recuperate your sanity and brain cells, then, even if you're just going to a conference. Have a good trip.

Good books are, well, good. I still think you should check out "House of Leaves". If you do that, I'll read any book you recommend (although I don't think I'd go over well with something like "Q-Squared", because I'm not a huge "Star Trek" fan).

Anyhow, I agree with Nik as well, though--going over one of the "Pern" books might be rather interesting.

Thanks. I had a good trip.

The reason why I'm picking Q-Squared is for the storytelling aspects as opposed to the Star Trekie point of view. Because it's a Star Trek book I'll be providing links to things that I think will be confusing.

While everybody's waiting, here's two critiques of the (Second) Battle of the Burning Plains. The first one's physically painful to look at, so I suggest copy/pasting it to TextEdit or somesuch.

Ooh, or Sir Apropos of Nothing might be apropos for comparision. There's an intentional anti-hero, compared to Eragon, who's mostly just an anti-protagonist, in that you can't quite sympathize with him, at best.

Perhaps after Q-Squared. I have Q-Squared on me, so it's the easiest for me to get.

I hope the conference goes well for you all. I like Peter David. Q-Squared was awesome.

I wouldn't say I disliked Q-Squared, although I do dislike some of Peter David's frequent motifs, but I preferred (and still do, actually) Greg Cox's Q Continuum trilogy (Q-Space, Q-Zone, and Q-Strike).

I liked the Cox books too. But I'm not doing it for the Q-ness but for the story telling aspects. I've found that Peter David has similar ways of telling stories as Paolini, but he does it well.
