So, I just finished re-reading the Half Blood Prince and was doing some thinking. After Harry leaves the tower, we never see Dumbledore's body again. Hagrid takes it somewhere... and Fawkes starts singing. The body that Hagrid brings to the funeral is covered in cloth, so we never see him again. It's just assumed that it's his body.

How powerful are Phoenixes in the Potter verse, anyway? They're immortal and definitely good with healing. They're tears are very powerful. I wonder if they could bring someone back from the dead.

Just a thought.

Other thoughts. I shall be reading Eragon soon. I hope. Whenever it comes in from the library. Not actually going to buy the book myself. Friend of mine suggested that I do a chapter by chapter analysis of it and post it up in my LJ. So I might do that. It could be amusing.

And finally, wish me luck because I sent off my book proposal to the Academic publisher today.

Good luck! By the by, I'm nearly finished with the first Harry Potter book. I think I'll finish by tonight or tomorrow night. It's bad ass.

Seems unlikely, though perhaps not impossible. Any cop-out ressurections for Dumbledore would make me lose so much respect for JKR, though. Besides, if phoenixes could raise the dead, it seems like Voldemort would have invested in one by now.
Unless there's some loophole that makes it impossible for scumbags to keep one, or something... but that seems like it'd fall into the category of the dreaded 'copout'.

Additional thought... why didn't Dumbledore have Fawkes heal his freakin' hand?

That is an interesting thought. Why didn't Fawkes heal it?

I smell plot bunny.

The obvious answer would be that JKR either didn't think of it, or just wanted to show how old and frail Dumbledore was supposed to be getting.
Though it's possible that the injury was just too severe to heal (it was described repeatedly as looking 'dead'), or was the result of a magic that Fawkes' powers couldn't penetrate. The issue is really the extent of a phoenix's healing abilities.

Oh, and good luck with the publisher, since I neglected to mention it in my first post.

Yes. And I wish I had the CoS on me so I could double check that chapter where Dumbledore described Fawke's abilities. Of course he did take a killing curse and it didn't do too much damage.

Thanks. ^_^
