I still do exist.

I've just been sort of busy. I've been making Wampas for the past three days. It turns out I can make one in a day if I have nothing really better to do. As I don't really have anything better to do, I've been making one a day. Currently the cat is sitting on top of the fabric for my latest Wampa. I figure this means that I could make a wampa in a couple of days. Build up a small inventory and sell them on like Etsy or something like that.

I found a 'sporking' of the Hunger Games. It's been interesting reading. I just finished the first book a couple of days ago and there were things that bothered me, though I mostly enjoyed it, nebulous things that didn't feel right and the sporking pointed them out and confirmed others that I thought were off. It's sort of like Eragon in that regard. And I was curious to see what it was like to come off on the 'I like this book how dare someone make fun of it' side of things. Surprisingly, I wasn't at all that furious. The author of them makes good points and in a reasonable manner. I'd be interested in later in bringing up something that is quite true, the idea of exceptions for the protagonist characters. Which honestly does show up a lot.

On another reading front, I've been reading the Three Musketeers. It's amazing how many events happened in the recent movie, so far, happened in the book. You wouldn't think they would have happened in the book because they're so... ridiculous and contrived. My mom thinks that if Dumas had been born today he would have been a script writer. One thing in the movie that struck me was the similarity of the Duke of Buckingham (Played by Orlando Bloom) and Aramis (Played by Luke Evans) in how they looked. It irked me a bit because I had trouble telling them a part (Bad facial recognition aside). But I just read a part in the book where Aramis was mistaken for the Duke. Porthos says that Aramis is of the same height and shape of the Duke.

Then there was the bit about how D'Artagnan runs into the three musketeers and challenges them all to a duel one right after each other. I thought that was just to expiate the three of them meeting D'Artagnan, but it turns out that actually happens in the book.

No mention of Air Ships yet though. :( (Kidding)

And now I have the urge to listen to Simon and Garfunkel. Don't have any of his music. Life is sad.

I have been sick the past couple of days. It is unhappy fun times. I barely left my bedroom.

I'm feeling better now!

At least my head is clear.

I have decided to do the Alexander the Great story for NaNo. I just need a plot beyond "Stuff Happens". I'm thinking maybe of playing around with the idea that Alexander means "protector of men" and taking over the world really isn't "protecting men". Maybe evil fairies plotting to take over the world themselves. Alexander goes all >:| at this (partially because if anyone is going to be conquering humanity it's going to be him). Need a couple of good books on him. Yay library!

Paper idea: Superman as modern day Beuwulf. Wondercon is coming up (and it's in the LA area! so that's a lot cheaper!) and I'm thinking of submitting to the comics arts conference again.

Finished reading the Game of Thrones and started the second book, the title of which I can't remember and isn't near me to check.

Thoughts: Does Martian kill off someone in every prologue?

Yes. I know they're evil. Stop pouring it on into ridiculous exaggeration.

You killed him? Really? That was unexpected. Well, I guess I shouldn't get attached to characters, should I?

Rory Williams Fact in regards to the Game of Thrones )

Sent a couple of article pitches to Wizards of the Coast for their magazines.

Thinking about changing Alec's lj name into something more interesting than "alec_troven". Yes. Spending the fifteen bucks to do it. Probably change it to "elementwizard".

Is anyone here good at making stuffed animals?

How much lenience should you give to a novel because of conceits of genre?

I'm reading an ARC currently to review and it's a romance novel, but there are still things that are irking me. However some of the things that irk me are things that are sort of 'parts of the genre'. Things like the Love Interest finding the Girl stunningly beautiful the first time he lays eyes on her. Etc.

A lot of stuff is good about it, but the cliches of the genre are bothering the hell out of me. So, should this sort of thing effect my review or should I let it be?

I finished reading Victory of Eagles last night (book five in Naomi Novik's Temeraire series) and I must say I was thrown for a lovely loop.

So, as mentioned, I bought a bunch of books on the weekend.

One of them was Q&A, a Star Trek TNG book.

I have a weakness for Q. Because Q is awesome. And stuff.

So, of course, I bought it. And read it. And was disappointed.

The writing was solid, the characters mostly in character. However the author had a problem with suspense and tension. And Q.

blah, blah, blah, spoilers )

I finished "His Majesty's Dragon" by Naomi Novik.

Well some of you may want to read it, so cut for spoilers. )
