kippurbird: (Oooh Shinny! Dragon)

I saw the Green Hornet with my mom tonight. Rented it out of the Red Box thingy in the local Albertson's. I have to say we were both very disappointed in it. It really was one of those movies where all the good stuff was shown in the trailer.

I think the biggest problem I had with it, was that this was supposed to be a serious superhero movie - as it wasn't a parody - and the superhero was an idiot. I'm sorry, but I don't want my superheroes to be bumbling morons. The Green Hornet was a bumbling moron.

I'm sorry, but I want my heroes to be kickass. I don't want just the sidekicks to be kickass.

They kept the Green Hornet pretty much an idiotic slob through out the movie who didn't know how to do anything. This was boring and annoying. He only gets "cool" in the climatic battle and then he screws it up by fumbling. He spent most of the movie screaming in terror.

How is this a hero?!

He is not.

He's a fat bumbling moron pretending to be a hero. This may not be such a problem except for the fact that his sidekick, Kato is so much more badass than he is doing all the impossible flips and kicks and stunts. Meanwhile Britt is busy cowering and screaming. Only when the bad guys are down does he kick them.

I wouldn't mind if Britt started off as an idiot and got better before the climax of the movie. But he doesn't. He just sucks.

I'm seeing X-Men tomorrow, hopefully that'll be better.

OH! Teleport is now up. Who wants to try it with me!?

Umm, you completely missed the point of the movie.

Yes, it's a hero movie. The hero even has a POWER, even though it is not a SUPER hero movie.

The Green Hornet IS NOT THE HERO.

Kato is the hero. Kato is the star. The whole thing is a subversion of your expectations. And... you missed it.

Britt is not the hero. He is not the star.

He just THINKS HE IS.

Kato is clearly the star, and Britt, the misogynistic asswipe, is HIS sidekick. Except Britt has the money and socio-economic status frequently given to the hero for his non-hero identity, in this story.

Frankly, the movie would have been ten times better with another actor playing Britt, anyway. Even as the satire it was, it fell flat in a number of places, and I found it more annoying than entertaining. Kato was pretty cool, though.

Since "money" and "socio-economic" are otherwise a bit redundant, I guess you're objecting to the fact that the decoy protagonist is white? Explain.

Not awake when posting, that day. Yes, redundant.

Not that he's white, but that even when he's clearly a douchebag and NOT the hero, his non-white sidekick, who IS the hero, has to present as a servant.

Also, I find Seth Rogen irritating and childish. *shrugs* I normally avoid his movies for the same reason I don't watch Jackass.

I think that if I see a movie about the Green Hornet and it is played in a semi-serious manner than I would like my hero to be the Green Hornet. I don't go to see Robin be the hero in a Batman movie. My expectations from knowing about the Green Hornet was that he was going to be the hero.

And thus, my complaints.

It obviously wasn't a very good subversion.

In the original GH, Kato was also the real star, though it was unintentional. This was a pastiche/homage to that fact. It helps if you were familiar with the original.

Also, Seth Rogen. How can you believe anything associated with him, and especially WRITTEN by him, would be at all serious?
Even the trailer makes the point. Rogen acts like an idiot, all the actions scenes are Kato, and then Rogen shoots himself in the face. Making it clear that he's an idiot.

It was a fine subversion.

It IS a dumb movie.

According to Rogen, the arc of Britt Ried was "Wastrel makes something of himself."

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I imagine that a boy billionaire wouldn't have much combat experience and would reflexivly cower and scream. Hell, even in the 60's series, it was Kato who did most of the fighting. A sequel set a few years later would probably see Reid as a much better fighter.

I still say Rogen is a poor choice for the movie and if there is a sequel, I hope he's recast.

Seth Rogen WROTE Green Hornet.

It was his idea, his pitch, his script, all the way.

I never watched that one, but I did see X-Men First Class last night. It was excellent.

Funny. I saw X-Men first class just before coming home to see this comment.

It was fantastic.
