I did the Convention Thing this weekend. Went to Gallifrey One, a big Dr. Who con in LA. We had the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson, as a guest this year. I utterly failed at getting his autograph. Which is a sad, sad thing.

Here's the video he made for the convention. A note: Last year he was supposed to guest, but couldn't make it because he was in the play Legally Blonde and so he sent an apology video showing his 'life' at the play and ending at home - where upon David Tennant showed up and goes "WTF Are you doing in my house!?" So, this is the follow up video to that.

I did staff for the convention, in operations. That meant I got to walk around and make sure things were going Awesome Like. It also meant I walked around a lot. Certainly got my exercise in! Around the floor, through the dealer's hall, up the escalator, through the lobby, down to the con suite and back down to the convention floor. I also did "door dragon" duty for the hallway leading to the green room.

Peter Davidson walked by me while I was doing this, but unfortunately he was talking with someone else so I couldn't beg for an autograph. However, I did end up having a conversation with someone I could have sworn is a writer for the show. Sitting as I did at the hallway, I was scribbling away in my notebook working on a short story (that's turning out to be rather long O_o) when he came up to me and wanted to know what I was working on. I said a short story. He then asked what I thought about writing long hand verse typing it up in the computer, saying that he didn't want to bring his laptop down to the convention and thought about writing it the old fashioned way. We had a short discussion on the pros and cons of each method and he said thank you before wending on his way.

I have no idea who he was. He wasn't wearing his badge. This will bother me FOREVER.

BUT, on another note, Larry Niven showed up unexpectedly. Unexpected Niven was unexpected. He did an autograph signing and a kaffieklatch thingy which we shoe-horned in at the last minute (Like we're going to say no). I got his signature. Also, while grabbing lunch in the con suite (which saves money, yo) I ran into him as well and we had a brief chat there too. I have this little dragon puppet that I wear on my shoulder, a wire that goes behind my back that I use to control the head. He bobs his head and looks around at people, generally giving them a shock and wondering if that critter is really real. Kids are smarter than the adults. They also don't mistake it for a bird as often. Anyway, he loved the dragon and gave Quinn a good head scratching. So. Yes. ^___^

Masquerade was awesome. They had a Hawaiian/Caribbean tropical Dalek with a punch glass in his/its? plunger hand and when it was out roaming around while we were waiting for the judges to come back it had a conga line through out the lobby. Sunday it had a confrontation with a "Victory of the Daleks" Dalek, which is a fully automated Dalek with a guy sitting inside of it driving it around with a speaker that he can use to sound like a Dalek. He was going around offering people tea, jelly babies (But not the red ones) and exterminating people. The WWII Dalek was "EXPLAIN. EXPLAIN. EXPLAIN" at the tropical Dalek, who started a conga line. There are few things cooler than a conga line with two Daleks in it.

Either that or I need more of a life. I fully allow for this.

The Late Late Show with Craig Fergison (I think that's how you spell it) taped some segments there as well as G4? G force? I don't know what it's called.

I also got to hang out with friends who I rarely see except at conventions it seems like. Which is utterly ridiculous in some cases as three of them live in the LA area. Yeesh. It was fun and a good time, if slightly expensive in the dinner department.

Swag:

1. 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver. (The apparently have a sonic screwdriver screwdriver too. How awesome is that? I may get that next year.)

2. 4 collectible LEGO mini-figs including the Elf. :D I did stand in front of the bags and tried to pick out the right one, and I got it. :D

3. The Science of the Discworld 2.

4. A Steampunk Hold out pistol.

5. Postcards for friends.

I did not take pictures because I am not a picture taker. I dunno why.

In other news, Larry is going to the Shop today to see what's up. Power cord is not the reason why it's gone buggy it seems as it is still having 'let's be plugged in' issues. -_-

I'm jealous! Heard about that on Craig Ferguson but I unfortunately wouldn't have a ride to LA. If they do it again next year my friend (or possibly several) and I may go, though. Two daleks in a conga line would make my entire weekend, personally.

Also, you should definitely check out Craig's show since he'll probably talk about the convention sometime this week--12 o'clock on CBS if you stay up that late. If not for the convention footage then purely because his show is actually pretty rad. He's a Scot and is full of self-depreciation and double entendre and has a gay robot skeleton sidekick and frequently uses puppets and has a panto horse named Secretariat. It's all a bit hard to explain unless you've seen the show.

Hell, you could just watch it on youtube if you don't want to stay up that late, lol. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps1yeCvSGAc)

There will be one next year! It will be the 23rd Gallifrey One. I am uncertain as to who the guests will be as of yet.

You should definitely come!

I has not a TV, so would have to watch it on Youtube anyway.

There will be pictures later of at least one bit, when I get my new hard drive equally loaded down with Adobe crap as the old one was.
