Ask any of my characters for advice, and they will provide it, advice columnist style. Your problems or fictional characters' problems both welcome. Management is not responsible for the results of following said advice.

Dear Andy,

I just moved from a small town in the Midwest to a huge metropolitan area for college. I've never felt so lost! Everything is so different from what I'm used to, and there are so many people I don't know surrounding me every day! What do I do? How do I cope?

The best thing would be to find a group of like minded people on campus to get together with. There are often clubs and things like that which can help get you socialized and meet people in a safe setting.

Be wary of going out into clubs and on the streets alone, there are all sorts of ... interesting figures out there which would make you a nice snack.

Tell me, Kippur's char, why, in the name of all it's sane, when you said "there are often clubs and things like that etc." I visualized a collection of cudgels and hammers?

Ooh, cool! I'm afraid I don't really know any of your characters well enough to ask anyone specifically, so this is an open question for any of your characters who want to answer.

Dear kippur's characters:

I'm confused. I recently competed in a sparring tournament (kung fu), and got second place. On one hand, I'm happy because second place is pretty good, but on the other hand, I only got through because the other guy was disqualified. I know it's not my fault that he couldn't control his contact, but I still feel somewhat... guilty? For winning on a technicality, where if he hadn't been disqualified he would have won by a wide margin.
Any advice you might have?

Being disqualified is what happens if you don't follow the rules which is part of a tournament. The fact that he didn't follow the rules means that even if he's technically better than you, in tournament circumstances he's not.

I would say that while winning by a technicality isn't the best feeling, it is still a win because you did what was right and what you had to do. You played fair. Which sometimes is hard to do.

I'm gonna pull a [livejournal.com profile] torylltales and ask an open question for any of your characters (points for evil, though):

So, like, I was setting fire to this small village off on the outskirts of the badlands (I was bored, honestly) when I kind of accidentally killed the person who was destined to be my arch nemesis (that whole 'Chosen One' business everyone in the village was talking about). Now, normally I would be thrilled to have eradicated my problem so easily-- as I'm sure anyone would be-- but really, I feel that I lost a big part of my future when I stomped in his charred skull. I don't really know what to do with myself anymore.

Any advice?

Lemme see...

Dear whoever reads these messages,
I have a friend and partner I've known for five years. I don't pry into her business and she hasn't mine, until recently. Now she wants me to come with her to her home country and launch a one-man revolution against an army that is on the way to overtaking that whole continent. Is there anything I can say to her that will knock reality into her head that this just isn't possible?

I'm assuming you don't have the supplies to do so?
