Not recommended. Self-publishing carries a MASSIVE stigma that you'll never shake. Paolini still gets shit over it.
If you really intend to go dead tree, do it properly or don't do it at all.
Also, you lose "first rights" by having something previously published via any channel, which means any real book deal you get will not pay as well as first rights... not even close.
You can also lose First Rights by having a work posted on any website for public viewing (like, oh, LJ). This is considered electronic publishing, as it's open to the public.
However, friends-locking the post retains the rights, as you're no longer "publishing" but merely sharing it with a few people for editorial and commentary purposes.
Although for me personally, it's not so much that he self-published as that his parents actually owned the publishing company he went through. There's no merit to that, not even in the sense of 'Oh, I shopped around and found a place that does good quality at a reasonable price, and I spent my own money to make it happen'.
And yeah, I have heard that publishers don't look as kindly on electronic publishing, etc. Why pay for something they might not be able to sell if people can get it cheap/free online.
