Paranoia is a strange thing.

Mr. Formulaic from my writing group didn't want to put his file up onto our Yahoo group site because, "Lots of elements-names-stunts in there that could be copied and inserted into other stories quite easily... you know." But that seems sort of silly to me, because what's stopping me from doing the same exact thing? Or really, (I haven't actually started reading it yet) what makes him think that his is so original that it hasn't been done before? I should trope it. I think I will.

Now the question is, should I hand it to him?

TVtropes really does ruin your life.

I went to Disneyland yesterday and I'm going on rides and keeping on thinking well, that doesn't work and gee, that's a such and such. Like for example I'm going on Snow White, and I start thinking, well geeze she gets married to the Prince and they don't even know each other. Oh, sure, it's supposed to be True Love's kiss, but really, he's just kissing some random mostly dead girl. And that's kind creepy. It reminds me of the Snow White story that Neil Gaiman wrote whose title escapes me. The Prince liked her because he could have sex with a dead person. So I started wondering well, how could I rewrite it so that it made more sense.

And then there was Star Tours. We were going to Endor, but get captured by the Empire before going on a Death Star run. Endor wasn't going to be a tourist destination during the rule of the Empire since they're building the Death Star there. Also, R2-D2 wouldn't be driving the shuttle in the first place. And you can't land right after coming in from light speed.

Finally, on a different topic all together, I noticed there are those "guild things" on Gaia and was wondering if maybe I should make them for Sporky type people.

Also, I lost my contact lens, so I'm half blind. Whee!

I've been reading your Twilight sporkings and re: Gaia online spork guild - you totally should. And then put the name up here so I can join and go nuts on a lifetime of bad writing and bad TV. Gaia needs you! My procrastination needs this guild!

*laughs* Well, of course I'd put up the guild name. Be sort of silly if I didn't. =D

I'd have to go back to Gaia, then.

On second though, don't do it. We already have enough unfunny sporkers, don't we? xD

Bah!

I don't even know how it works. And you don't have to go back if you don't want to.

I´m not sure about Snow White... it´s always fun to re-write fairy-tales, but seems that nowadays everybody and their dogs are doing this, trying to make the heroins a little more feminist, the love arc a little more believable for the modern reader, the princes a little more... *there* (Snow White´s didn´t even had a name, had he? I mean, what do we know about this guy anyway?)

So. It´s a cliche and sometimes it gets annoying, but when it works is great (see Ella Enchanted). I had great fun rewriting The 12 Dancing Princessess (even if it sucked big time and I had to deus ex machina my way out of it). Now I think I´d do the Swan Princes. Or one named Lazy Girl (a very obscure story that nobody seems to know about).

I just found it! Yay. The name wasn´t the Lazy Girl, it was The Three Spinners. I love that one. =)

Well, I don't know about the whole feminism thing, but I would like to make the romance, if not more believable at least, how come it actually worked.

Find the ORIGINAL fairy tales and read them. I can assure you that you will be shocked. If you then write something based on the original you'll find that people will think you are very inventive, and gruesome.

Oh, I know. The originals were terrifying.

Don't ask me how, but I got into a conversation with someone at work about the original fairytales. I told her how Sleeping Beauty really ended and she looked like I just stomped a puppy in front of her. Her daughter or friend (or some female with her) grinned and said I should have told her about Cinderella.

Go for it. I had the same fears, before I realized that I need the imput, and the chances of my story getting published and becoming the most original thing since sliced bread and/or being ripped off from friends-locked entries were very slim.

Snow, Glass, Apples. It's in Smoke and Mirrors, although it's quite possible it shows up in other books as well.

*goes off to lurk yet again*

And here it is online:

Snow, Glass, Apples

I'd love to find out how many tropes from books, movies, TV, and anime have worked their way into Mister Formulaic's story. But then, I am the kind of person who wonders about stuff like that.

Creating a Gaia guild is expensive... Like 20,000 gold or something. I guess to some people that isn't a lot, but to me it is.

Really? Oh. Well... I have no gold to do that. AH well.

If you give me some time, I'm sure I could scrape some up for you. Maybe not the full 20k, but a good sized chunk.

Are you relatively new to Gaia? I've been around since November 2004, which means I'm positively ancient by Gaian standards. Not quite dinosaur old, but pretty close.
