Damn Laws.

This is utterly stupid, damn California laws. If you work more than five hours you're required to take an hour break. However you're not paid for that break. I find this highly irritating because I'm stuck here on campus and can't go anywhere so I'm sitting here for six hours and required not to work for an hour and I'm not getting paid for that hour. So, I might as well just work for five hours because I'm going to get paid for that. I mean, the reason why I upped my hours is so that I could get that extra hour's pay.

*grumbles*

At least you get breaks. In my state, employers don't have to give them. :-(

Google-fu. I has it.

½ hour, after 5 hours, except when workday will be completed in 6 hours or less and there is mutual employer/employee consent to waive meal period.

See if they'll consent to having you sign a waiver to do away with your lunch break, since it sounds like you're only working 6 hours.

Unfortunately, they can only afford to pay me for five hours and they need me to be there for that six so I can cover for people.

At the local Uni's bookstore the required break is only half that long, but it's still unpaid. Really, it makes more sense to work more less-than-five-hour-shifts with rules like that.

...I like Minnesota law better- for every two hours worked, you must be allowed one paid fifteen minute break. Or at least that's how I heard it explained.

I love my breaks. Of course, i work standing all day.

why not eat during the hour you can't work? I can't imagine not eating for six hours. My blood suger would drop to the point were I'm shaking.
