The question of the day. How can you molest state property? Or more exactly, rocks and dirt. I went for a walk earlier and I saw a sign that said no trespassing or molesting state property and behind the sign on the fence were dirt and rocks and nothing at all molestable. A very... odd thing, I think.

I think the molesting refers to wildlife. No pesterinag the animals.

I remember a park in canada that had signs up saying "Everything in this park is protected", which of course lead to us making jokes like "don't step on that leaf, it's protected! Don't swat that mosquito, it's protected!"

Pedantic answer: Molest (n): To disturb, interfere with, or annoy.

Silly answer: If you take the stones away, you're getting the field's rocks off.

I think it means molest as in mess it all up. Synonyms for the win! That does kinda crack me up, though. *laughs*

Well, it tends to involve a very strange and often painful fetish. There are some places you just don't want to get scraped or abraded...

Because my mind is a very sick thing, I couldn't help but think of some news story I read about a guy trying to have sex with pavements/property/etc.

On the internet, or a newspaper?

In Spanish, "molestar" means simply "disturb". One possibility is that the sign was made by someone whose native language was Spanish.

Molest means to disturb or invade, with a particular emphasis on DO NOT WANT. It's commonly used in reference to sexual contact, but can also be used with places, as seen on the sign.
