Mom: It's horrible that the three people I care about the most are having problems.

Me: But Dad's doing good, his hip is doing fine.

Mom: He's having other problems. Which you don't want to hear about.

Me:*takes a guess* Your sex life?

Mom: Yes. He's not getting any and I'm not getting any and it's causing problems between the two of us.

Me: *hands over the ears* LALALALALALALA

On an incidental note, I've never understood why most people consider talk about parents and other relatives' sex lives disturbing.

See, that's what I don't get. Sure, I don't want to imagine it. I'm not going to try to visualize what's happening, but beyond that, I just don't care.

Of course, that may be because I'm largely asexual, so maybe if I cared more about sex, I'd find it unpleasant, too. *shrug*

It's part of the incest taboo. Your genes don't want you to get overly interbred, so they make the thought of parent-sex squicky so you won't be tempted to engage in it.

There's also a psychological effect whereby if you grow up in close proximity to someone, you have a mental block that prevents you from considering them in a sexual light. Usually that means siblings, but a really close friend can fall into the same category.

(On the converse, if two siblings DON'T grow up together, there may very well be sexual attraction between them. My human sexuality textbook had an anecdote about 2 identical twin brothers who were separated at birth, grew up, realized they were gay, found out they had an identical twin and eventually had a relationship.)

Yeah, I guess the process is "sex reference -> thinking about sex -> incest taboo". Since I pretty much don't get to step 2 (except, at most, an incidental non-emotional, thought), the incest taboo isn't triggered.

And, yeah, I've heard about the genetic sexual attraction thing. It makes perfect sense to me. People who are related often have similar interests and personalities, so it makes sense that if there's no counteracting Westmark Effect, that attraction could develop.

I'm probably taking this too seriously, but don't say you "hate" your mother just for something like that. After all, it's a parent's job to make their children feel as uncomfortable/embarrassed as many times as possible.

If you think that's bad, shortly before my Mom passed away, she had a conversation similar to that when she was moving into my sister and her (at the time) fiancé's place.
I can't remember what but I think my sister mentioned something about not wanting to disturb Mom by any "strange noises" in the night. To which Mom replied: "It's okay. I may not be able to 'do it' anymore..." Long pause. "...but I can listen!"
