kippurbird: (What goes on in Kippur's head)

A good writer brings the characters they write about to life, and once they're alive, they aren't really under your control anymore, I think. You become the person who explains what happens to them. What happens to them isn't really your choice, but a result of their choices.

And this got me thinking about my characters and, as I'm working on the NaNo, one character in particular. His name is Jono. Originally, I had him planned as sort of the opposite of Alec. Aggressive when Alec was more submissive, stronger while Alec was more dexterous, full precognition as opposed to Alec's minor talent, telepath to Alec's empath, and stronger fire wizard to Alec's elemental abilities. Moralless to Alec's morals. He was going to be sadistic, possessive and abusive towards Alec, who would later have to kill him.

But, strangely, he's not turning out that way at all. At least not completely. In regards to most of the points above, yes he is, but in regards to less tangible points, like the sadism and abuse and morals he's not so much. He's not sadistic, though he is possessive and he doesn't abuse Alec at all. He seems to genuinely care for him, which really surprises me as I'm writing him. He's nothing like I thought he was.

I know that if I force him to be like I thought he was, he would come off as stilted and stereotypical and not at all real. He wouldn't have any good points, he wouldn't be sympathetic. It wouldn't be as dramatic when Alec later kills him. So, it's good that he's telling me that he's not like I thought he was. He's become a much better character because he has his good and bad points.

I tried to access the Chick Tracts at work and I got the fire wall, the reason why? Jokes/Humor. =D

Speaking of work.

One of my co-workers who has been unhappy for a long while at the job had a meeting today with the boss man. I don't know what was said, because they were in a closed room, but I know they were in a meeting cause I saw them in the window. When the co-worker came out he was sniffing, like he was trying not to cry. I asked him what was wrong he said that he hadn't been fired, but he needs to find a new job.

I don't know if that means that he wants to find a new job because of not standing to work here anymore or something else. Since the boss became boss, we've lost at least three people who went to find a better job or just couldn't take working here anymore.

I believe that I will be number four because I'm definitely going to start looking for a new job in earnest.

As my mom said, this place has become a hell hole.

Chick Tracts are one big, very bad joke. The kind where the people doing them are actually serious about them. (Catholics aren't Christian and are going to hell? WTF?) It's a total case of them not only taking the Bible literally, but then taking the literality out of context so that they can bash everyone who doesn't agree with everything they say.

Man, sounds like the new boss is a real tyrant.

I know. They're hilarious.

The new boss is a bit of a tyrant, but I think it's because he's not sure exactly what he's doing. Bit over his head and all.

Until the fact that people take them seriously hits, and then I start getting nauseous.

Wouldn't surprise me.

I try not to think about that.

It certainly seems like it.

I agree with you about characters. I try to write and see where it takes me. I don't thrive on plans.

That's sad about the guy at work. What exactly is going on there? Mean boss, bad co-workers?

I was very surprised as how he turned out. Very.

And while yes, I believe it's both, though I don't think the boss is being mean on purpose. *points above*

He almost CRIED? Does no one have a backbone anymore? Give it a little while, the new guy will calm down. He's just making sure you all know who is in charge.

There's a difference between asserting authority and causing three (maybe four) people to leave, citing you as the reason for it. Given that you plainly don't know the person from the meeting and no indication was ever given from Kippur on anything about his personality, aside from the fact that they were plainly very hurt by what had transpired, it's fascinating that you'd make a sweeping generalization that that person was weak and couldn't stand the weight of the meaty fist of Boss-Man.

Really, that was a big broom there.

Not really. What kind of spineless weakling is brought to the verge of tears by a talking-to that couldn't have lasted longer than 10 minutes. Give me a break. The young generation is filled with so many whiny, emo-kids who burst into tears at the barest sign of hardship. I don't know the co-worker's age, but I am willing to bet that he is certainly under 30.

Give me a break. "The boss yelled at me! WAAAAAHHH!" What is he gonna do when he runs into real hardship? Kill himself?

He's not a spineless weakling nor is he a newbie. He's been working there for several years now and is in his late forties. The boss did not yell at him. It lasted about a half hour. And he's suffered through a lot of hardship.

Then he has even less excuse to cry! Getting a "talking-to" from your boss is hardly a reason to be moved to tears. It is the very definition of being spineless!
