I'm having work issues.

Paul gave me an assignment. Make sure our periodicals match up with what the computer says we have. Basically that meant going through the stacks and writing down every periodical and issues we have and then updating the database. A lot of foot work as we have two walls of periodicals and some of them are in Hebrew. Paul said that it should take until December to do and suggested having students helping me gather the information and making forms and things. I just grabbed a pad of paper, walked down the wall and took down the information myself. Then I updated the database myself. Paul also wanted me to make sure that a group of periodicals that used to be in the main stacks but moved to the periodicals were marked as periodicals and not main. That actually took a bit of thinking because some of the periodicals had over twenty issues that needed to be changed.

The program that we use has something called a rapid update feature which allows you to change a something in a batch of files. Like location or status or... I dunno. Whatever. Paul mentioned it to me once. After a lot of experimenting I figured out how to do it. It saved a lot time. So, I finished that as I did the periodicals as they were in the same section.

In any case I finished on Tuesday.

Paul comes over about half hour after I finish and asks about how I was doing on the project. I say that I'm finished. He asked about the other project and I said, oh, I'm done with that too.

He kinda looks at me funny/confused and says something like, "Oh. Good. Good. That's good." And then walks off. And I don't really see him for the next two days nor does he give me another assignment to do. So I spent most of yesterday just sort of staring at my computer screen.

And I don't know... what to do. He just doesn't seem to know what to with me now that I've finished all the work he assigned to me before my deadline. I'm not sure what he's going to do about it. I'm just very quick. It was easy for me. I don't think he knows what to with me because of it.

So, I guess I'll see what happens.

Heehee. You outdid yourself. Or just outdid what he thought was possible, based on his own capability. And then he couldn't think of anything else to give you. I guess you could always ask him to double-check what you did and see if maybe you did something wrong? Which could account for why he expected it to take longer? Otherwise, just enjoy the free time? I dunno. :)

[LOL] I had the same problem during my former career - too efficient and all the deliverables exceeded the expectations of my pointy-haired bosses.

One thing I would suggest, however, is that you perhaps pace yourself a little if he's going to "leave you alone" for a few days after you use your Speedy Gonzalez superpowers; there's nothing worse than being underemployed for an extended period.

Should find pacing yourself too difficult and he starts to set a pattern of "leaving you alone", just try to keep yourself busy, perhaps you can do some writing or perhaps start taking a correspondence course.

Cheers,

Ted

I think that you made a mistake. You should have finished the project in a couple days (or however long it took you) and then not told your boss. Spend the next few weeks doing relaxing all day at work. Then as soon as mid-November comes around, say you finished. That way you still finish early, but get to take some time off.

Yeah. You want to find something to do, like pronto. Even if this means sweeping up the place or taking a duster to the books. Sitting there, even though you did the work already, isn't good.
