I belong to a social group called AUGA Classic which is for adults with Autism or Asperger's syndrome, what have you. It's a pretty cool group, we've been together for about ten odd years, maybe a little less. Anyway there's this woman there (I wanted to call her girl, but she's older than me). She's awfully nice, if somewhat hard for me to understand. It's not that her words are unintelligible, it is that she has what my mum calls "canned speeches". Which are speeches she gives by rote whenever she wants to talk to someone.

She's very intelligent, all into politics, art and the world around her. She's always immaculately dressed, better than most non-autistic people I know. Her biggest problem is this. She was institutionalized during her formative years, from about five to about thirteen.

Now I've always sort of known this, and it's really pitsy sort of thing to have happen to someone, even if it did have a happy ending. Her father was able to rescue her and take her out and into a safe and happy home. But I found something out today that just made my blood boil.

The day that she was put into the institution? It was her fifth birthday.

How's that for a birthday present?

And she was high enough functioning to know it was her birthday. She was expecting a birthday party. That's what she was expecting, and for an autistic person to understand what a birthday is and what a birthday party is is pretty high functioning. It means that she was aware of the world around her and everything.

But they put her away with the crazies. Actually her MOTHER!! put her away on her birthday!

My mom told me that this woman told her this about the event: Couldn't they have at least waited one more day? Until after her birthday?

That's so sad! I have a friend whose brother is autistic. He lived at home for his first 12 years but when he got to be a teenager he was getting too hard for them to take care of him by themselves. So now he lives in a group home but he comes home on weekends.

I can't believe they'd do that on her birthday! *tries to imagine it* that's awful.
