A drabble about Alec when he was younger.

Run fast, and quickly.

That's what the healer had told him.

Run fast, and quickly.

And that's what Alec did.  The ten year old boy dodged around people and carts, causing shouts of annoyance in his wake, but he didn't heed them. He had to get to his father's shop. Fast. The streets seemed to blur around him as he ran.  It seemed to take forever to get there, but he did get there.

Pushing open the door, he blurted out, "Father! Father!"

His father was with a customer, showing a sword. His head jerked up and his eyes narrowed as he saw Alec running inside. The customer, a solider, looked at Alec with a frown.

"Alexander," Raven snapped. "What did I tell you about bothering me when I'm with a customer?"

"Not to... but..." Alec said, panting hard.

"Alexander!" He pointed to a tall wooden stool that sat by the counter in the back. It was where Alec usually sat when he visited the shop, to keep out of the way.  Reluctantly Alec made his way to the stool, past the racks of weapons, with a quiet prostesting "but". Raven watched him, eyes promising that there would be a talk when he was done.

Satisfied, Raven turned back to his customer with an apology.  Alec sat on the stool, hands his lap, sitting as still as he could, trying not to breathe. He watched the clock slowly tick, it's pendulum swinging back and forth, ticking away the seconds.  The bartering with the soldier seemed to take forever.  But finally it came to a close and the solider left, sword in hand.

"Now," Raven asked, turning to his son, "What is it that you wanted?"

"The healer! He said to come quickly! Mother there was an accident! She fell and she wasn't moving, the Healer said to come quickly!"

The change that came over Raven was instantanious. A hand lashed out from him, knocking Alec down from his perch on the stool. The boy went down with a startled cry. "Why didn't you tell me! Why did you just sit there!" Raven roared.  Alec cowered away from his father, unable to answer.

Snarling Raven yanked Alec up by the arm and dragged him up. He shoved him towards the counter with the command, "Watch the shop." before he took off running.
