I got my first response to a reiview I posted.
The story was a "Harry Potter" fan fic, in which the only resemblence to Harry Potter was the names.
I sent a reivew, saying:
And this has exactly what to do with Harry Potter? I really don't see anything that looks like Harry Potter in here. No Lord Voldemort, magic, Muggles, Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I don't even see Harry, Hermione and Ron either.
Why is this in the Harry Potter section? Shouldn't it be on fictionpress.net?
She then replied with the classic:
look...this is fanfiction.u can write whatever u bloody want...
So I sent her the following reply:
I hope she does.

NO! Wrong. Original fiction is where you can write whatever you bloody
want. Fan Fiction is writing BASED on and takes place in a published
piece of work's world. If in fact you want to write whatever you want,
write original fiction. If you want to write stories BASED on J.K.
Rowling's world using characters that SHE has created, meaning having magic,
dealing with Lord Voldemort (if you want to use Harry) and going to
Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, then you would be writing fan
fiction. Fan fiction implies that you are a fan of the work you are
basing you're own work after. Original fiction means that you can do
whatever you bloody hell wanted to.
Did you realize that if you were to change the names of the characters
in your story, it would be indistinguishable from an original piece of
writing? If it were fan fiction, you wouldn't be able to do that.
Once again, I stress going to fictionpress.com if you are so interested in writing what
you (not 'u') want.
J.W. Cart.
I hope she does.
