Remember that plot bunny I mentioned a few enties ago? This is the first section of it. I don't know if I'll do more. But it's some thoughts.

The letter from Hogwarts for Rachel had caused quite the stir in the Goldberg household. Never in all their imaginings would there be a witch in the family. That was until Mr. Goldberg admitted that he was a wizard. The argument that followed could have been heard half way down the block. Though it wasn’t really much of an argument so much as Mrs. Goldberg yelling at her husband for not telling her such a thing and Mr. Goldberg apologizing. A lot.

Then they had gone to the Rabbi at their Shuel. Mrs. Goldberg had yelled at him for a while. Rabbi Daniels had taken the yelling quietly, before asking what was the problem. Mrs. Goldberg showed him the letter. He read the letter carefully, twice. Mr. Goldberg then explained to him what it meant.

The Rabbi went to talk to some of the other rabbis. One of them happened to have a witch for a sister. This made things easier, though they did have long discussions about the halakah of going to Hogwarts. But in the end it was decided that Rachel could go to Hogwarts. With conditions.

She was to be allowed to continue to observe her own religion without being penalized for it. That included being able to observe Shabbat and have kosher food. A letter was sent to Dumbledore who responded that those were acceptable conditions.

This was how Rachel Goldberg found herself on platform 9 ¾ at Kings Cross Station with her father and mother on a gloomy Sunday afternoon surrounded by other families saying goodbye to their children.
