Have written most lovely bullshit for a paper abstract for a young adults conference. Haven't written the paper yet, but hey? The abstract probably isn't going to get picked anyway.

Young Adult Responses to Literature: Fan Fiction and the Mary Sue

The internet has provided today’s young adults with a tool that their predecessors didn’t have, an outlet to post their responses to books that they have read in the form of stories for their friends and strangers to read. One of the responses that the young adults use is a form known as fan fiction, which are stories written in the worlds of their favorite books like Harry Potter or Ella Enchanted. Fan fiction is an outlet for the writer to explore writing in a friendly setting and explore a world that they have enjoyed in books. It allows them to do things like going to school with Harry Potter or on the quest with Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring.

It allows them to explore alternate possibilities expanding their minds outside of the original narrative to what might have happened if… Fan fiction also allows them to start creatively writing within a safe framework. They are familiar with the world that they are using and know what is right and wrong in it, thus more sure of themselves in their writing. It also allows them to create a character (a Mary Sue) that embodies who they wish they could be and place them into a world where they wish to be. A perfect self with out the flaws of their normal trappings. A more beautiful, intelligent, skillful self that is praised and loved by the characters in the story. Characters that the writer admires and wishes to be like. By doing this they are expressing their desires and ideals of what or who they would like to be.

Fan fiction is a way that young adults explore the narratives that they read, looking at and creating new themes and ideals that they find in a creative setting that allows them to explore their own dreams and desires.
