A while ago I mentioned that I felt that Alec's culture seems rather Victorian era that "traditional" Medieval era found in fantasy novels. The rest of his world is leaning more to the traditional, but his particular corner of it does not. Then I started thinking recently. Well if they're Victorian era then maybe they'd be like Steampunk, but with magic. Magic-punk maybe? I'm trying a story with this idea in mind to see how it fits.

I'm not sure if it'll work though. Only way is to try though, yes?

It would really just be magical fantasy with a Victorian setting. No need for any -punk terminology. >_>

However, it should also work just fine. I've written something in a similar setting, and I've seen a couple other nice examples of this.

Why does all high fantasy need to be set in the same five square miles of medieval England, anyway? We need variety, dammit!

I'm trying to think of a rebuttal to this, but I'm mesmerized by your icon. Dash it all.

I'm not quite sure about this, what parts of his culture are Victorian in your view? I mean the whole LGBT friendly atmosphere and relatively informal feel in regards to etiquette, from what I've read anyway, feels a tad more modern than that.

Victorian era, like Steampunk, but with magic.

The "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman, is Victorian Steampunk with magic.

I was just talking to some people about that last night.

I've been fiddling around with the world since you last read the stuff. And I meant more with the technological level than anything really.

I actually thought about that too.

Go with it, I say. I plan to write a rather humorous (I hope) high fantasy story set in a sort of Victorian era, with two types of most typical fantasy clichés (two types of dragon, of elf, of dwarf, etc.) that sort of sends up or subverts a lot of fantasy clichés (the elves don't live in trees, for example). WE SHALL BE TREND-SETTERS :D
