Twilight, have some.
Aug. 27th, 2008 07:44 pmChapter ten. Interrogations
Bella wakes up thinking about how it couldn't have been a dream because of the way she remembers how he smelled. She notices that it's dark and cloudy outside and is thrilled. If we remember Way, way, way, way back in the beginning of the book, about a month ago, I believe, time wise, Bella absolutely HATED the dark and gloomy days. Hell, two or three days ago she did. Now? Not a mention. It's all "YAY! EDWARD WILL BE ABLE TO COME TO CLASS TODAY!" She's completely forgotten about this character trait. She's not all gloomy about the gloomy weather. Instead she's thrilled because it means she'll be able to see Edward. It's not an "At least I'll be able to see Edward" but a "It was foggy and dark outside my window, absolutely perfect. He had no reason not to be in school today." One of the first things we learn about her is that she loves the sun and that was one of the reasons that she disliked going to Forks. But now that doesn't matter because Edward's here!
When she gets outside to go to school, Edward is there.
Why shouldn't he be giving her a choice? This shouldn't be something to comment on. Just because he shows up, doesn't mean she's obligated to ride with him. Of course she's free to refuse. Even if he demanded that she get in the car with him, she still has a right to refuse. Perhaps a better word would be "offered". Still, of course, she gets in.
He gives her his jacket which she snuggles into as they drive off. The family isn't there, apparently they took the bright red convertible. When Bella asks why they don't drive that one more often, Edward says they want to blend in. Like I said, it's ostentatious. We try to blend in." That's not blending in, even having the car in Forks isn't blending in. It's blending in if they were in Seattle, but not Forks. The reason why, Edward says, they all have cars like that is because they like to drive fast. If they were truly worried about blending in, then no matter how fast they like to drive, they wouldn't have such cars. Or at least, they wouldn't have the cars in Forks.
They get out and Jessica is waiting for Bella. She is utterly bursting with desire to know what's going on with Bella and Edward. Bella manages to stall saying that they'd talk in Trig.
Then in an utterly despicable and horrendous act, Bella asks Edward to read Jessica's mind so that she knows what sort of story to come up with when she gets pegged with twenty questions.
Because spying on your friends is A-Okay! Why doesn't she even protest that it's an invasion of privacy. She hasn't shown any disturbance by anything Edward has done involving his powers. Instead it's always OKAY! There isn't any conflict here. If Edward had offered to tell her what Jessica had been thinking and Bella protested this, that would have been interesting. But by Bella just asking straight off shows that she doesn't care about Jessica. Instead she's merely trying to cover for herself and protect what she feels is important. Again, only herself.
Not only that but Edward himself also shows this disrespect for those around him. He blatantly says that he's going to be spying on Jessica and Bella. Her only reaction is not furry but embarrassment, rather like having a parent come and talk to that guy you really like and invite him over for dinner.
Emotional reactions. They're utterly wrong.
More later.

When she gets outside to go to school, Edward is there.
It was unusually foggy; the air was almost smoky with it. The mist was
ice cold where it clung to the exposed skin on my face and neck. I
couldn't wait to get the heat going in my truck. It was such a thick fog
that I was a few feet down the driveway before I realized there was a car
in it: a silver car. My heart thudded, stuttered, and then picked up
again in double time.
I didn't see where he came from, but suddenly he was there, pulling the
door open for me.
"Do you want to ride with me today?" he asked, amused by my expression as
he caught me by surprise yet again. There was uncertainty in his voice.
He was really giving me a choice — I was free to refuse, and part of him
hoped for that. It was a vain hope.

Then in an utterly despicable and horrendous act, Bella asks Edward to read Jessica's mind so that she knows what sort of story to come up with when she gets pegged with twenty questions.
"A little help?" I pleaded. "What does she want to know?"
He shook his head, grinning wickedly. "That's not fair."
"No, you not sharing what you know — now that's not fair."
He deliberated for a moment as we walked. We stopped outside the door to
my first class.
"She wants to know if we're secretly dating. And she wants to know how
you feel about me," he finally said.
"Yikes. What should I say?" I tried to keep my expression very innocent.
People were passing us on their way to class, probably staring, but I was
barely aware of them.
"Hmmm." He paused to catch a stray lock of hair that was escaping the
twist on my neck and wound it back into place. My heart spluttered
hyperactively. "I suppose you could say yes to the first… if you don't
mind — it's easier than any other explanation."
"I don't mind," I said in a faint voice.
"And as for her other question… well, I'll be listening to hear the
answer to that one myself." One side of his mouth pulled up into my
favorite uneven smile. I couldn't catch my breath soon enough to respond
to that remark. He turned and walked away.
