Chapter Eighteen.


We're about a third of the way through the book now. We are now getting to the pregnancy test. One hundred and fifty five pages in we get to the pregnancy test. \~/ \~/ \~/



Anita ponders the pregnancy test. She's in the bathroom pacing as the pregnancy test tests her pee. She is worried and nervous and it feels rather realistic and emotional.

I didn't want to sit in the bathroom for the entire three minutes. But I didn't want to go outside and face the men either. I compromised; I paced inside the bathroom. It was ten steps from the door to the edge of the tub's raised marble. Ten steps, back and forth. Marble is cold on bare feet, but I usually didn't spend this much time walking on it. I was either coming in and out, or sitting in hot water in the tub. I concentrated on anything, everything, but that little piece of plastic where it sat on the sink. I tried not to look at it. If you peek early, it may not be conclusive. I was carrying a man's watch in my hands. Micah's watch. He'd taken it off his wrist and handed it to me, because mine was still sitting on the night stand besides our bed.

Beyond the redundancy of the "he'd taken it off his wrist" part. Where else would he taken it off ? Or does he have a habit of putting his watch on other places? Perhaps down below? Still t feels sort of anxious. Nervous, like it should be. Like she should be. She might be pregnant and she doesn't know who the father is. Even though that part doesn't seem to bother her that much. \~/

When she finally looks, it's two lines. She's pregnant. She has a reasonable response to this too as she nearly faints. Claudia comes in and helps her up and out.

Richard is the first to reach her and when he finds out that she is pregnant, he picks her up and swings her around. This makes her upset and she yells at Richard for being happy about it. Hormones, I think. Anyway everyone wants to know what they should feel if they shouldn't be happy about the baby. Anita admits that she didn't know but everyone being happy bugged her. She wants to know why everyone else is happy, like Micah who's been neutered, I mean had a vasectomy. And he's all "because your child." \~/

We then get some of Micah's angsty past when Richard asked why did he do that to himself.

Micah wrapped his arms around me, held me close. "My old alpha, Chimera, liked pregnant shapeshifters. If one of the women came up pregnant by someone else, someone she cared for, Chimera would take her until she lost the baby. He got off on taking her from her lover, from fucking her while she was pregnant with someone else's child, and from her losing it."

ANGST!!

Also, how many weird fetishes can we stick in one book. Necrophilia, bestiality, um whatever that one is....voyeurism. I can't think of any others, but I'm sure they're there too. \~/\~/\~/

While that is disturbing enough, what I don't understand is how Chimera is able to kill a baby by fucking the mother. Unless he's got a whale sized dick, there isn't anyway he can reach up there. Unless Micah means that he uses other things to fuck the baby dead. But then would that really be taking her. It doesn't sound like he's the type to use toys. In fact no one in Anita 'verse seems to use toys. If they had, I think Valentina's problems would be a lot less. So, Chimera must really have some dick. This also reminds me of those Hentai stories where the alien tentacles get so far up a woman that they enter her womb and go out her belly button or something.

So... Chimera has now been proven to have a tentacle penis.

This is put aside quickly for Anita's needs as Jean-Claude tells her "Whatever happens, ma petite, we will not desert you." \~/

They do a group hug.

No, I'm not kidding you. They do a fucking group hug. Richard gets sucked into the group hug after protesting that he doesn't want to be apart of the group hug. Anita goes over to comfort him and poor Richard breaks down and starts to cry. Everyone basically dog piles and pets Richard as he cries. \~/

With Clay's body to protect Richard, Nathaniel hugged me and CLay, but we all hugged Richard. Clay had understood how much Richard needed the touch, but he also understood how he might not let leopards and vampires get that close. But another wolf from his own pack, that was safe. That one moment of understanding pushed Clay from bodyguard to friend in my book.

Micah came in at my back, hugging us close. Asher finally knelt, more by Nathaniel and me than Richard, but his hand touched Richard's hair. We all gave what we could.

No Richard! They're cuddling you to the Dark Side! Don't give in! Don't give in! Fight it! Come back to the Light Side! \~/

He thanks them for the dog pile, saying that he needed it and he left. Anita asks him to stay (to brain wash him more) but he says that he doesn't want to share her and if he stayed he'd say something to make her upset. Anita is sad that he's leaving, but lets him go.

The Chimera thing is almost understandable... well, not the fetish, but... I dunno, I've always thought it was supposed to be unwise to have sex during pregnancy... at least, at a certain point in the pregnancy.

Wouldn't surprise me if shifters liked it rough.

I mean, I don't think the text is trying to say the simple act of penetration would kill the baby...

In a pagan LJ community, there was a post by a teenage girl who was afraid she was pregnant (she and her boyfriend used a condom but she thinks it broke). So she asked if there was "a magic way to find out if I am pregnant." She was scared to go to the drugstore to buy a pregnancy test, and she didn't want to send her boyfriend because she didn’t believe that men should be buying "those tests," and "that's a girl's job to buy them but I'm too scared." And yet she wanted to psychically or magically determine if she was pregnant. I headdesked repeatedly. For some reason this chapter made me remember that.

I'm pretty sure what Micha meant about Chimera fucking them till the lost the baby is that they would shift while he was taking/fucking/raping (which ever you prefer) them and the shift would cause them to lose the baby. I think I remember that explained in another book.

LKH just assumes that if you're reading this book, you've read the one's before it, and doesn't need to explain anything to any extent. Because only batshit crazy people who get addicted to her books make it this far... or something.

This chapter reminded me of my friend's boyfriend, who thinks that having sex with a pregnant woman will kill the baby. He's also said that he thinks women only have their periods once a year. When my friend corrected him, he said, "Really?! Wow, that SUCKS!" Well, yeah.

My brain hurts. The only way putting off the pregnancy test would make sense is if she was going to come up not pregnant, but she came up pregnant, so it should have been ahead of all the "what do I do with the baby?" drama.
