Movie Review

Rating pg-13 (I think)
Type Sci-Fi, popcorn flick, action adventure
Happy Ending: Reasonably
Number of limbs chopped off? None. At least none seen. There was a bit with a ax and stuff so I imagine it took place off screen.
Violence Sci-fi violence. Not to much blood.
Sound track Want to buy it.
Plot Yes.
Plot summary The crew of the Space Ship Serenity have to protect a member of their crew/passenger from being caught by the Allience as they are set upon by a space ninja. *giggles* Space ninja.
review I had only seen half an episode of Firefly, the tv show that this movie is a continuation of. I had heard good things about it from several people (one who insisted that I go and see it under pain of death) and both Ebert and Roper really liked it, which is rare because Roper has thsi problem about fantasy sort of movies. I knew that it was sort of a space western. And that it was done by Joss Whedon. Joss Whedon does good in my book so I went to go see it with my mom.
We arrived in time to catch three previews before hunkering down into the movie. The exposition on who the characters are was given fairly well, their personalities and realationships quickly and deftly handled so that new comers would know who they are and old comers wouldn't get bored quickly. Dialogue was snappy and realistic.
The plot while a basic sci-fi romp with the big space battles and chase scenes also included some thoughts on humanity and what people do to bring civilazation to 'non civilized worlds' as well as the nature of belief and sin.
I had some problems with the fact that some of the time line was a bit skewed. I didn't know how long it took between the introduction of the movie and the introduction of the heroes. According to the TV show, about eight months had past.
I think Whedon did a nice jab at the third Matrix movie. (It's near the end) and a nice homage to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
All in all I'm glad I went to see it.
