So, Paladin's are good things. They are the definition of good. Their description says that they MUST be lawful GOOD. If they deviate from this lawful GOOD position they are no longer Paladins. It doesn't matter who their father was or their ancestor was or who's their uncle, they are GOOD.
Why am I saying this?
Last night at our D&D session we came upon a young man by the name of Phoenix. (Or he came upon me at a full charge on a horse with a lance after we tried to break into his family's house and criticled ooowie.) He had bright red hair and was sort of lanky looking. In fact from the barest descriptions he looked rather liked another Phoenix we knew. A very EVIL sorceror who we were trying to defeate and kill.
It turns out it was a family resemblance. See EVIL!Phoenix had a son two hundred years before current game and said son married into the Valjean family, a very rich, noble and heroic family through the daughter of Auld Valjean a one time traveling companion of EVIL!Phoenix. (Both Auld and Phoenix were PC's of mine in the old campain and I thought it would be funny if their families mixed.) Several generations down the line Paladin!Phoenix was born.
Theo, my guy and Xel, Munchkin's guy get caught and thrown in jail for breaking and entering among other things to the Valjean manor. Paladin!Phoenix comes to try and talk to us. We find out that he is a Paladin and Munchkin says something along, I trust paladins but I can't trust you because you look like your ancestor Evil!Phoenix. And I'm like O_o WTF?! It's a PALADIN! PALADINS = GOOD!! I try to explain this and he says "I know, but he's related to Evil!Phoenix and he looks like him and so I can't trust him."
So I say, "Well my DAD is an EVIL NECROMANCER BENT ON BECOMING A GOD! and yet you trust me."
And he says yes, but I don't know your dad and if I was from your plane I might have acted the way the people on your plane did when they saw you. And I'm thinking, my dad may be an EVIL NECROMANCER BENT ON BECOMING A GOD!! but he's also a schrawrmy charming bastard who doesn't act all Teh Evul! He can actually be rather Nice. Which is part of the reason why he is SO DANGEROUS! and if you're not believing me that he's TEH EVIL then he'll chat you right up onto his side, and you'll become and Evul minion and I'll be kthnxsbyenow as I try to kill you.
STUPID MUNCHKIN!!
We found a PALADIN bent on DESTROYING EVIL!Phoenix and he CAN'T trust him.
