Well, every hero needs their shiny objects of Dues Ex Machina. At least in theory.
I think the comparison to Greek Mythology would be more relevant if there had been a second monster/obstacle/ thingy. As there isn't one, it seems to be more stolen from the other sources previously mentioned.
