Strange but true: The Firewalls that block me from going to that binding site that I need to go to while at work will let me visit a KKK hate site. I think the Firewall is antisemitic. It doesn't let us go where we want but gives us free access to people who hate us. Perhaps this is its way of saying go die now? Or perhaps it's trying to oppress us. It's not letting me go to sites that I need to get my work done so then I get fired and am poor and will die a horrible death on the streets.

Great, the firewall is antisemitic and it's trying to kill me.

Or it could just be me.

Anyway, on to more pleasant matters.

I had my workshop with Miss Formulaic last night.

She went into a ramble to this one guy about the Hero's journey and how he wasn't following it and kept on blabbing about act turns needing to turn on the hero and this character was the magician and really basically trying to stereotype every character in his book. It made me want to take Joseph Campbell's book and smash it over her head. Yes, the hero's journey is important and everything but that doesn't mean you have to be a slave to it. And it doesn't mean that you need to have the hero, the magician, the ... cute sidekick or something.

I gave her my crit which was basically that the profiler was entirely unlikeable in my opinion and that whole scene with the molesting at the car was just... wrong. I got told that it was supposed to be hot and kinky. It certainly didn't come off like that to me. And she smiled and nodded the entire time and I don't think she paid a bit of attention to what I said. Perhaps I need to do a fan girl on her instead of a Lit Major.

Your firewall is set up wierd, that's all I can say... you should talk to the sysadmin, see what they can do about it.

I hope the guy Miss Formulaic was bleating at told her off? If not, bummer. She really needs to be treated the way she treats her critics. Not that she'll shut up, of course.

I didn't really read the excerpts of her work, it sucked so much. What I skimmed was not hot, kinky, or even a good story. You need to do a cluehammer to the head, is what you need.

I think Joseph Campbell's point was to make universal observations about the "hero's journey," not to set down an outline for every writer to follow.

Out of curiosity, how do the other group members reply to Miss Formulaic?

I got told that it was supposed to be hot and kinky.

I'm sure it was supposed to be. The problem, of course, is that it really, really isn't. NC is a ridiculously delicate line to walk, and quite frankly having a character's internal monologue pretty much lay out at the start that she considers it sexual assault isn't really the best way to start off. It doesn't look hot and kinky, it looks creepy and like 'she really wanted it' is a reasonable supposition insted of misogynist garbage.

And did you mention the utter ridiculousness of him slamming the stock market and the meat industry and getting lauded for it?

It is a very weird set up, and frustrating.

No he took the crit and made some notes, but I don't know how much he'll take of her advice though.

I'm trying to do the clue hammer to the head, but she just keeps on blowing me off with she's copying so and so's formula or style or it's a thriller... garrrgh.

She apparently thinks otherwise. She likes pigeon holing people. It's very aggravating.

They smile and nod. I argue.

I agree with you totally there.

Apparently it wasn't him who was bringing the stock market to their knees but the people who were poisoning the meat.

Well, that's not surprising. She's pigeon-holed herself already. Methinks that's where she feels comfortable.

Hopefully he doesn't take any of it.

Yeeeeah, that's a lot of denial right there.
