Nano ramblings of no-import
Bad-asses need to have bad-ass introductions.
Here's Ginger Milton, great-something or another aunt of two of the Protagonists, Kale and Trever. We first learn about her when Kale and Lan are discussing what might be inside the cave they're investigating.
After Shit Happens and It's Bad. Ginger herself enters. Ginger hasn't been mentioned since their discussion, though Rhys has established that she is in fact related to Kale and that she is as awesome as Kale says she is.
Of course saying something is awesome is a lot different than seeing something awesome, as we've seen in many books before. So, she can't just walk in on the scene and be like 'hey guys'. She needs an entrance, even if no one is expecting it. It has to be a reveal of some new consequence something that is going to drive the plot forward. Why is she here at this particular place in time, the readers need to ask. And what is she going to do to help the heroes?
Which, hopefully, this does.

“Well, it could be. It could also be that the whatever it is in there is so well shielded that I can’t even tell that there’s something dangerous there.
“You Russians are always so dour. You should think more positively,” Kale said.
“You asked,” Lan pointed out, ignoring the jibe.
“Well, as long as it’s not some sort of creature from the unspoken nethers trying to kill me, I think we should be fine.”
“What if it’s a Fairy Lord who wakens up and takes offense to our existence because he thinks that we’re the ones who imprisoned him?”
“My aunty Ginger will take care of it.”
“A dragon?”
“Aunty Ginger.”
“Slavering were-beast waiting for someone to cross its threshold?”
“Aunty Ginger.”
Lan frowned at him. “I didn’t know you had an aunt.”
“She’s not, not really. Virginia Milton is my mother’s great something or another aunt.”
“You’re claiming that Virginia Milton, the monster slayer, keeper of the Virgin Queen’s virginity, and protector of all English Queens hence is related to you?”
Kale held up his hand. “I swear on my honor as an Irish lad, it’s true.”

A crate by the one remaining vehicle, though in how good condition remained to be seen, tumbled down with a large crash. Kale looked up sharply at the noise and drew his gun out. Glancing at Rhys, he started to walk towards it, weapon held at the ready.
“Kale Ian Connor Delvar put that silly thing away or so help me, I’ll clock you over the head and box your ears so hard you’ll be hearing the stones in your empty head rattling around for a week.”
“Aunty Ginger?” Kale squeaked.
A woman with ginger hair similar to Kale’s stepped out from behind the SUV dressed in combat fatigues and carrying a rifle. She looked like a sultry ad for the military, complete with dirt smudges and plenty of weapons all sorts attached to her, from her combat boots to the
needles that held her hair back.
“Of course it is, boy, I sure’s not be your mum.” Ginger Milton, Queen Protector and milita of one looked out at the others. “And it looks like I got here just in time.”
Which, hopefully, this does.
