Yeah, I do wonder why a 'true name' magic system has that kind of mental battling. It doesn't seem to be anything they work to develop, they just do it.

Your setting could still work... maybe make it a mindscape kinda deal, a separate plane of sorts where thought and imagination and willpower control the reality around them.
