Alot of times, that's *why* they're "low-functioning", defensive mechanism against a perceived threat. And all too often, the "experts" respond by direct one-on-one intensive focus, which simply pushes the person further and further away.

I remember reading of an autistic whose first words, at the age of 35, were "Don't talk to me like I'm an idiot" :-)
