Actually Brenton is not the Phoenix in the novel. The Phoenix in the novel currently has no human intelligence and thinks that he's a bird even though he's in human form. He's more the MacGuffin in the book. A living, breathing, biting MacGuffin, but still a MacGuffin. He won't be getting much stuff to do plot wise until the next book.
On the other hand, Brenton is just completely a random Phoenix that popped in my head.
