Jun. 28th, 2008 08:59 amThis is the scene I was talking about here. The interaction between Alec and Alex has been passively antagonistic up to this point, with Alex always showing up and annoying the Hell our of our Hero protagonist. The scene starts just after Alec's had a series of really shitty luck in trying to find transportation.
Almost everywhere, it turned out. Alec’s request for passage to the island had been denied. Politely but firmly denied. The man who owned the ferry that took people and supplies to and from the island had been down right insistent that Alec couldn’t come. His reason being that Alec looked too fey and the dragons didn’t like fey. At least that’s the reason he gave them. True or not, he refused to get them passage.
“I can’t believe it,” Alec said tossing his arms up as he and his siblings walked back into the palace. “Doesn’t he know who I am?”
“After the hissy-fit you threw? Yes, I’m sure he does.” Laruna laughed. Greywolf snorted quietly at her.
“Hissy fits aside, it still leaves you with the problem of getting to the island.”
Alec grumped, but didn’t say anything. He stalked ahead of them a few feet, his heels snapping at the flagstones with sharp clicks. They were almost to the welcoming court and from there the palace where he could stew in failure. Not that it would be productive, but it would feel good.
As they entered the archway Alex popped out so quickly that the three of them started. He stood in front of them, giving a wide smirk.
“What do you want, boy?” Alec snapped irritably. He knew that he should just brush pass the boy, but he also knew that they would be followed until Alex got what he wanted. Discipline and orders only worked when they came from Alex’s master.
“I know where you can get a boat.”
“How did you know we need a boat?”
“Because I know these things.”
Alec stepped up so that he stood about half a foot away from Alex. “How did you know?” he demanded.
“I don’t have to tell you.”
Frustration and rage bubbled up inside of Alec and he slammed Alex to the ground, a tiny bit of fire flickering around his fists. “Tell me.”
Snarling, Alex scrambled up. For a moment it looked like he would attack, but just before he sprung forward, Orion barked out a commanding “Stop.” His posture immediately changed from anger and hatred to submissiveness and shame. From one of the palace entrances Orion stepped into the late afternoon light. “Lovely, what are you doing?”
“He hit me! I was trying to help and he hit me!”
Orion looked over at Alec, who shrugged. He didn’t have to justify it. “You really need to keep him in check,” Alec said and then started to walk off, Laruna and Greywolf following. Just as he walked pass Orion, he got yanked by the neck and pulled back by the General.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“What do you think you’re doing?” Alec yanked himself free, his shirt tearing as he did.
“You hit my slave. No one hits him but me.”
“So? What are you going to do about it?” he clenched his fists tightly, flames flickering in warning around them.
Orion moved.
He moved so quickly that Alec didn’t see it. He just found himself on the ground, the
air knocked out of him from a punch in the stomach. Dazed he barely managed to roll out of the way of Orion’s kick. From his position on the ground, Alec sent out a large burst of air intending to drive him back.
It barely staggered him. Alec tried again, delving deeply into the air and grabbing a huge swirl of air that twisted like a tornado and sent it barreling into him. This time Orion took a few steps back.
Just a few. Nothing at all really.
And Alec didn’t have anything stronger, not with wind. Anything else he could use would damage property, which he couldn’t do. He flicked a glance at his siblings who looked utterly shocked. Greywolf came out of it first, and with just the slightest gesture, brought up a thick wall of air. Alec staggered to his feet as Orion stared at him, not bothering to go through the wall. He had a feeling that if the General wanted to, he could. That they were just being humored. Alex stood just behind Orion with a savage and eager look on his face.
“We’re going to go now,” Greywolf said evenly. “You are going to let us go.”
Orion started to laugh, but instead began to choked.
Alec knew this trick of his brother’s. He could remove air from an area, or in this case, a person’s lungs. Greywolf refused to teach it to him and he couldn’t figure it out on his own. “Like I said, you are going to let us go, am I correct?”
The General nodded, just very slightly. Another gesture and Orion took a huge gasp of air. He gave Greywolf a narrow look, not happy that he’d underestimated the quiet Troven. “I will. But that won’t get you the ship.”
“Ship?” Alec asked, trying not to sound surprised.
“To get to the Dragon Isle. There are other ships that can go there besides the
commoners. Say, like the military’s.”
Hissing an intake of air that hurt from the punch in the stomach, Alec said, “And what would we have to do in return for use of this ship?”
“Take me with you.” His eyes stared at the Dragon Sword. “I have a sincere interest in how this ends out.”
“I’ll… think about it,” Alec allowed.
“Don’t take too long. The offer isn’t good forever. After all, I am a busy, busy man.” He put a light hand on Alex’s shoulder and walked away. “Come on lovely, let’s get that bruise looked at.”

Date: 2008-06-29 10:09 am (UTC)She had more empathy for the slave? Bwuh? Obviously, she really does only want sparkly pure Eragon heroes. Not only have I seen/read protagonists doing far worse, I've seen/read heroes doing far worse. (Though I may have a generous definition of "hero.")
